Tayo Lewin-Turner University of Bristol Student

Tayo Lewin-Turner

Caine Tayo Lewin-Turner is a student at the University of Bristol and has worked with Bristol Museums, Brighton Museum, Historic England and DCMS. Tayo has also created and edited publications by students centred around Bristol’s history and is currently publishing and editing a Black Studies edited volume by students in Bristol. Emphasising the importance of memory (both contemporarily and historically), Tayo’s research focuses on collective memory and its relationship to identity, social movements and modern marronage. Tayo’s engagement with Museums stems from these interests; questioning not just what is chosen to be displayed and the omission of specific narratives, but also the location and connotations of the lieu de mémoire. Tayo aims to problematize Bristol Museums’ interactions with the memory of Transatlantic slavery and highlight the opportunities missed by Bristol Museums to be an active participant in the current ‘memory war’ taking place in Bristol.
