Fashion as Creative Economy: A Social Justice Agenda


Abstract


This talk introduces the key concepts and ideas emerging from the AHRC CREATe research project, and co-authored with Dan Strutt and Carolina Bandinelli). These include the ‘milieu of fashion labour’, ‘social fashion’, ‘female-led fashion place-making practices’, ‘art theory’, and ‘monopoly rent’. The focus will also be on the dynamics of independent fashion production in London, Berlin, and Milan.


Biography


Angela McRobbie is Fellow of the British Academy and Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University of London. Her most recent books are The Aftermath of Feminism 2008, Be Creative: Making a Living in the New Culture Industries 2016, Feminism and the Politics of Resilience 2020, Fashion as Creative Economy 2022 (with Dan Strutt and Carolina Bandinelli). In production are Feminism, Young Women and Cultural Studies (2023) and Ulrike Ottinger: Film, Art and the Ethnographic Imagination (2023).
