Dr Simon Renoir

Simon Renoir has a PhD in Information and Communication Sciences. He wrote his thesis on “The creative turn in Detroit: the overlapping issues of the structuring of the creative industries and urban regeneration”, under the supervision of Pr. Laurent Petit (Sorbonne University). From September 2015 until May 2016, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan, Department of Sociology, under the supervision of Pr. George Steinmetz.

Since September 2018, he has been a teaching and research assistant at the Université Paris 13, Department of Communication Sciences.

His main research area focuses on the recent shift from the concepts of culture and of cultural industries to the newer notions of creation and creative industries, and on its economic, social and cultural consequences. More specifically, he has studied the emerging conflicts between the communication strategy that aims to rebrand Detroit as a city of design and creativity and the past blue-collar identity of the city.
