Dr Tyler Denmead

Tyler Denmead is a University Lecturer at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Queens’ College. He is the author of The Creative Underclass: Youth Race, and the Gentrifying City (Duke University Press, 2019). This auto-ethnographic book examines how race-based discourses of youth and creativity are entangled in state-sanctioned efforts to gentrify cities, and he proposes youth-generated cultural political strategies to oppose them. His journal publications can be read in Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Visual Arts Research, Art Education, International Journal of Education through Art, and the International Journal of Education and the Arts. He serves on the editorial review board for Art Education, Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, and Studies in Art Education. He is the occasional artist, producing performances such as Tier Two Worker Remote Office (2018). He is working on a critical performance-based project that examines the potential of blockchain as a strategy for slave reparations with collaborator Dr. Albert Stabler.
